Warming Oceans

We must continue to pay attention to news about climate change and act to reverse the course in order minimize its negative impact. A recent article in apple news by Sarah Sloat reported on Studies that suggest some of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming actually go into our oceans, which leads to increase in water temperature. Some effects of ocean warming are more extreme weather, less oxygen in the ocean, destruction of coral reefs and decrease in ice in polar regions. “Global warming is ocean warming- and ocean warming has serious consequences,” said lead scientist Lijeng Cheng Ph.D of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. “The ocean warming is mainly driven by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activities.” Sadly, from how much greenhouse gases have increased, it does not look like it can be fixed anytime soon. Ocean warming will continue to increase unless we take action. If the world were to achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement, the ocean warming would be cut in half by 2081 (rather than increasing at a disastrous rate if o action is taking). On this note, we still need to take actions to stop this horrific problem. Some ways of decreasing ocean warming and global warming is by decreasing our carbon footprint, using less energy from fossil fuels and turning to renewable sources, reducing food and water waste, and helping speak out against deforestation. LET’S DO THIS.
