Robots for Hire

There’s no doubt that robots are all around us. They clean our clothes, help prepare our food, and for some help with house chores. Some would say that they are taking over the world. According to National Geographic, robots might be the ones that can help us save it. A paper called “Tackling Climate Change with Machine Learning” gave thirteen areas that we can use machines to better help our environment including education and CO2 removal.

One AI(Artificial Intelligence) is being created to simulate the effects of extreme weather like rising sea levels and forest fires on our homes. The creators of this, researchers from Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms(MILA) hope to release this as an app that can show different climate change outcomes once it has more data. Their goal is to convince communities that want to do something in the fight to save our planet to come together to help. The more people make an effort to conserve our environment the bigger impact we will have against climate change.

The Carbon Tracker, a nonprofit satellite, is taking the same kind of approach but with the finance industry. What the Carbon Tracker does is monitor carbon emissions from coal plants using satellite imagery. The goal is not only to convince the finance industry that coal plants just aren’t feasible, but to get a better idea of where our air pollution is coming from. This will in turn help us know who needs to decrease their emissions and give us regular updates on the emissions to make sure they decrease.

We still have a lot to go, but progress is being made. These are just two examples of technology that is being developed to track and solve the big problem of climate change. All we have to do is make sure we’re all taking steps in the right direction. This week, I challenge you to look up ways you can use your tech to educate yourself more about our growing climate problem. Every action counts. Let’s KEAP Earth green!
